Solid state physics

A characteristic of the solid state is that the electrons of the single atoms overlap upon condensation which leads to new electric phenomena. Depending on the energy niveaus of the electron a solid can show insulating, semiconducting or metallic electronic conductivity. Especially in solids which are condensed in the crystalline state the periodicity leads to unique properties related to the interaction of the crystal with electromagnetic waves or fields.
