## Areas:

Metric system: In SI units, the basic unit is the square metre (m²), a square with a side length of 1 m. Beyond that the area units can be used with the common SI prefixes:
1 m² = 0.000001 km² = 10000 cm² = 1000000 mm².
In land surveying, areas are given in are (unit symbol: a) or hectare (1 ha = 100 a).

Anglo-American system: In Anglophone countrys the following units of areas are used:
The square inch (sq.in.), the square foot (sq.ft.), the square yard (sq.yd.), the acre (ac.), representing the area a ox can plow in one day, and the square mile (sq.mi.)
It is: 1 sq.in. = 645.16 mm², 1 sq.ft. = 144 sq.in., 1 sq.yd. = 9 sq.ft., 1 ac. = 4840 sq.yd., 1 sq.mi. = 640 ac.

Cross sections: To specify cross sections, e.g. in particle physics, the unit barn (b) is common.
It is: 1 b = 1 ⋅10-28 m².
